AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — UPDATE: 1:20 p.m.

The Amarillo Police Department has released the details of the fatal crash near Interstate 27 and SE 34th Avenue Thursday morning.

According to police, at about 8:20 a.m., officers were sent to the overpass in the 4000 block of SE 34th Avenue for a major accident.

A 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 18-year-old Evelyn Jasmine Rios, of Amarillo, was headed westbound when she lost control of the Jeep, slid into oncoming traffic and hit a 2011 Mazda Tribute, driven by a 17-year-old male from Amarillo.

Rios died on scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

The 17-year-old was taken to the hospital with what was initially thought to be life-threatening injuries.

Justice of the Peace Clay Houdashell has ordered an autopsy.

Speed and black ice are contributing factors in this collision, police say.
