AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Amarillo police responded to two crashes on I-27 Monday afternoon, one of them leaving a man dead.
The first crash was on northbound I-27 between Georgia and 45th Avenue.
At around 4:10 p.m., APD officers were dispatched to this crash where a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, driven by 24-year-old Rolando Martinez of Amarillo, had rear-ended a 2016 Toyota Camry, driven by a 50-year-old Amarillo woman.
Both vehicles were unable to exit the highway, and they traveled several hundred feet, coming to a stop in the inside lane on the highway.
A semi-truck pulling a trailer, driven by a 57-year-old Woodward, OK man, was unable to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles and struck the Tacoma which struck the Camry again.
The driver of the Camry was transported to an Amarillo hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and Martinez was transported with life-threatening injuries.
Martinez later died as a result of his injuries in the crash. This incident is still being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
The second crash that occurred on southbound I-27 between Georgia Street and 45th Avenue is still being investigated.
Details on the second incident are limited at this time, but we will update the story as more information becomes available.
