Man dies after three-vehicle wreck on I-27
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — UPDATE: 9:45 p.m.
Amarillo police have released more details on the wrecks on I-27 on Monday and left one man dead.
According to a news release, at about 4:10 p.m., officers were sent to a wreck in the 4300 block of I-27 in the northbound lanes.
A 2016 Toyota Tacoma, driven by Rolando Martinez, 24, of Amarillo, was traveling north in the 4400 block of I-27 in the inside lane. Martinez rear-ended a 2016 Toyota Camry, driven by a 50-year-old Amarillo woman. Both vehicles traveled several hundred feet before stopping on the inside lane of the highway.
A 2001 Freightliner tractor, driven by a 57-year-old Woodward, Oklahoma man, was also traveling north on I-27 pulling an empty Timpte Grain hauler trailer. The driver was unable to avoid the stopped vehicles and struck the Tacoma, which then struck the Camry.
Martinez and the driver of the Camry were both taken to a local hospital, Martinez with life-threatening injuries and the driver of the Camry with non-life-threatening injuries.
Martinez later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.
The Amarillo Police Department's Traffic Investigation Squad remains investigating.
Traffic in the northbound lanes of Interstate 27 are backed up to Western Street due to a major accident between 45th Avenue and Georgia Street.
According to an Amarillo Police Department news release, officers are on scene investigating the accident.
Officers are also reporting a second major wreck in the southbound lanes of I-27 between 45th and Georgia.
Drivers are asked to avoid both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-27 or expect delays.
No further information has been provided but APD says they will provide an update when the information becomes available.
